WhatsApp is surely one thing which we use on a daily basis. You wake up in the morning, you firstly read your chats and keep an update on everything. But this app to which we all are so addicted and glued, is it secure?

WhatsApp has end-to-end encryption, and the data on WhatsApp is stored on its parent company Facebook. But now since Facebook itself is not secure, there is data breach issues on it, so what about WhatsApp?

We cannot completely secure our data on WhatsApp but atleast try that it does not land in the hands of the wrong people. Here we share some tips to protect your chats and WhatsApp not completely but atleast form a protective wall around it.

USE WHATSAPP WEB SAFELY

The WhatsApp web has made reading and replying messages easily even when your device isn’t around you. While using this feature many times we forget logging out from the systems. Even if you’re system is not with you and you missed logging out, just open WhatsApp web on your phone and logout from all devices.

USE TWO-FACTOR VERIFICATION

This is best among all the security tips on WhatsApp. With the two-factor authentication, it will ensure that unless you add the 6-digit security code, nobody will be able to set up WhatsApp on your phone. This can be done through Account > Two-step verification.

NO ACCESS TO YOUR PROFILE PICTURE

Anybody can text you once they have your number. This is what WhatsApp let’s you do. With this they can also view your profile picture which can be misused. Not to worry! This feature in WhatsApp let’s you keep the profile picture visible only to your contacts and not everyone. Go to Settings > Account > Privacy > Profile Picture > My Contacts.

HIDE WHATSAPP MEDIA FROM GALLERY

The WhatsApp media can be easily seen in the gallery since it’s saved on the phone memory. It’s sometimes appears to be annoying to see all the pictures landing in your gallery roll. To avoid this all you need to do is using the file manager go to the WhatsApp media and create a file called .nomedia. After this reboot your phone and whooooosh!! All the WhatsApp media will be hidden. If this seems difficult use a third party app to do so.

LOCK WHATSAPP WITH APPLOCK

Next what you can do is lock your WhatsApp using applock. You can set it with a default applock or also download the third party app which is the Applock and the most downloaded app locker.

DEACTIVATE YOUR ACCOUNT ON LOST/STOLEN PHONE

If unfortunately your phone is stolen or lost, the first thing you need to is deactivate your account along with the SIM deactivation. There is no remote deactivation for WhatsApp which makes the process too long. You need to send a mail to the WhatsApp support for the same with all the details of the account.

WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS

There are many suspicious links which are the main cause for a chain of phishing scandals and scams. By applying to the above settings also, we need to be aware that we do not click any of these suspicious links. For example, there are many messages sent for buying phones at a cheap price or at exchange. By clicking the links you will be landed up to fill out surveys which will then ask you to fill out your personal details like Bank Account and many more. So it’s better to avoid these links.

TURN ON SECURITY NOTIFICATIONS

By turning on the security notification there is a new security code created when you use a new phone or laptop. WhatsApp will send a notification that your security code has changed. By this you can check the encryption with the other person ensuring its security.

LASTLY USE WHATSAPP SAFELY!

Implementing these steps makes you partially secure but how to use it securely is in your hands. We hope that there will be certain strict security measures taken to give us the assurance that WhatsApp is secure!
